  • In ancient Greek music: the highest note of the lower of a pair of tetrachords, identical in some scales with the lowest note of the higher tetrachord. Hence, in the two-octave scale known as the Greater Perfect System: the middle note, which is also the highest note of the second lowest of the four tetrachords.

Origin

Late 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Morley (?1557–?1602), composer. From ancient Greek μέση middle string of a seven-stringed lyre, highest note of the lower tetrachord, use as noun of the feminine singular of μέσος.
