Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Blount (1618–1679), antiquary and lexicographer. From post-classical Latin mysteriarches overseer of Christian sacraments from Byzantine Greek (or earlier) μυστηριάρχης person who presides over the mysteries (in an undated inscription), chief disciple of a heresiarch from ancient Greek μυστήριον + -άρχης.
