A type of flute-stop in an organ, often of oak, introduced to England by the organ-builder Bernard Smith (1630–1708) in the late 17th cent.
Late 17th century; earliest use found in Specification. Origin unknown. With the ending perhaps compare e.g. diapason, clarion.
