Early 17th century. From Urdu pēškaš and its etymon early New Persian pēškaš (Persian piškiš) gift presented by an inferior to a superior, tribute from peš before, in front + kaš- (Persian kiš-) drawing, carrying forward. In form peshkesh via Turkish peşkeş.
