Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Nathan Bailey (d. 1742), lexicographer and schoolmaster. From post-classical Latin acacia and its etymon Byzantine Greek ἀκακία, perhaps a transferred use of ancient Greek ἀκακία guilelessness.
