Early 17th century; earliest use found in John Bingham (fl. c1616). From ancient Greek λόχος ambush, body of troops, company, childbirth (literally ‘place for lying down’ or ‘fact of lying down’) from an ablaut variant (o-grade) of the base of λέχεσθαι to lie down from the same Indo-European base as lie.
