1930s; earliest use found in Eric Partridge (1894–1979), lexicographer and etymologist. From the names of Pip, Squeak, and Wilfred, a trio of animal characters, respectively a dog, a penguin, and a rabbit, featured in a children's comic strip in the Daily Mirror from 1919 to 1955.
