A non-periodic variation in surface atmospheric pressure in the Arctic region coupled with an opposite variation further south (and associated with similar variation in the North Atlantic); an index of this variation, which is negative when Arctic pressures are high, resulting in greater southward movement of cold polar air to temperate mid-latitude regions.
